Digital Plymouth is a Community Interest Company that has spent the last decade bringing the city’s dynamic tech and creative community together. What began as a simple idea has grown into a thriving network of more than 1,000 innovators, creators and technology enthusiasts.
The initiative began in 2012, when the team at Elixel recognised that, despite Plymouth’s wealth of talent, there was no regular space for the digital community to connect. Inspired by tech events in other cities, co-founder Paul Bird joined forces with Garry Hunt, Sabrina Simpson, Mike Turner and Rob Wick to create something new. Digital Plymouth was established with a clear mission: to bring people together, showcase the outstanding work happening locally, and firmly position Plymouth on the national tech map.
The first event welcomed 30 attendees — a strong signal that there was genuine appetite for connection. Building on that early momentum, the community continued to grow, and within just a few years Plymouth was officially recognised as a UK Tech Cluster, a milestone achieved through collective effort and collaboration.
Since then, Digital Plymouth has hosted more than 42 events and welcomed over 150 speakers from across the UK. Today, its events are powered by the teams at Elixel and Soundview Media, with valued support from partners Acronyms and Real Ideas, who host gatherings at Devonport Market Hall.
More than a series of events, Digital Plymouth represents a movement — proof of what can be achieved when a community comes together to build something for itself. The organisation is proud of what has been created and looks forward to continuing to support and grow Plymouth’s tech ecosystem in the years ahead.
